What does a barristers\u2019 clerk do?<\/h2>\n

A barristers\u2019 clerk is responsible for the administrative work in a barristers\u2019 office, or a chamber as they are known.<\/p>\n

The term \u2018clerk\u2019 is in some ways misleading as the role is actually quite senior and carries a high level of responsibility.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Day-to day tasks<\/h2>\n

Barristers\u2019 clerks carry out a wide range of tasks to support the work of barristers and chambers. The work includes:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Preparing documents for court<\/li>\n
  • Meeting with clients and liaising with the chamber on the best barrister for their case<\/li>\n
  • Negotiating fees etc. with solicitors<\/li>\n
  • Case timetabling<\/li>\n
  • Case co-ordination e.g. arranging meetings, conferences etc.<\/li>\n
  • Liaising between clients, solicitors and barristers<\/li>\n
  • Managing barristers\u2019 work diaries<\/li>\n
  • Carrying out legal research for barristers<\/li>\n
  • General administrative duties<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The more senior a barristers\u2019 clerk is, the more high-level responsibilities they will take on.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Barristers’ Clerk training and qualifications<\/h2>\n

    There are no formal entry qualifications required to become a barristers\u2019 clerk. However, a good standard of general education is essential for most positions.<\/p>\n

    At least 4 GCSEs at grades A-C will normally be the minimum requirement. Many barristers\u2019 clerks also have good A-levels and many have degrees.<\/p>\n

    Many barristers\u2019 clerks undertake training before or during employment, as well as being trained on the job by an experienced clerk. The Institute of Barristers\u2019 Clerks, for example, runs a BTEC course for barristers\u2019 clerks.<\/p>\n

    A barristers\u2019 clerk will be expected to have some knowledge of the law and legal proceedings, particularly the areas of law which the chamber specialises in. They will also be expected to keep up with changes in the law.<\/p>\n

    To be a successful barristers\u2019 clerk, it helps if you are:<\/p>\n

    • Confident<\/li>\n
    • Diplomatic and tactful \u2013 some cases may be of a sensitive nature<\/li>\n
    • Able to work well with others and independently<\/li>\n
    • Committed \u2013 you will be required to keep up with changes in the law and unsociable hours may sometimes be required<\/li>\n
    • Highly organised \u2013 your organisation and co-ordination skills will be key to making sure a chamber runs smoothly<\/li>\n
    • A good communicator \u2013 you\u2019ll be communicating with a range of people every day and being able to communicate in a professional and friendly manner is essential<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Employment opportunities<\/h2>\n

      The majority of barristers\u2019 clerks work for chambers, which are usually based in cities. It is possible for barristers\u2019 clerks to work freelance or remotely and although this type of working currently accounts for a minority of opportunities, it\u2019s an area that looks set to grow. Through freelance or remote work, a barristers\u2019 clerk would be likely to support barristers who also work in this way.<\/p>\n

      Barristers’ Clerk Salary<\/h2>\n

      The amount a barristers\u2019 clerk is paid will depend on the seniority of his or her position, the size of the chamber and its location.<\/p>\n

      A junior barristers\u2019 clerk salary is between \u00a324,000 and \u00a335,000 on average. More senior, experienced clerks earn from \u00a340,000 to \u00a380,000.<\/p>\n
