They represent and advise both employers and employees.<\/p>\n<p>Employment law is a very fast-changing area of law. Employers may work with clients on general employment law queries, as well as on workplace disputes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Day-to-day tasks<\/h2>\n<p>The types of tasks employment lawyers will be involved in include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dealing with employment tribunal claims on behalf of either an employer or an employer<\/li>\n<li>Advising on employment contracts<\/li>\n<li>Providing guidance on redundancy<\/li>\n<li>Drafting and checking employment policies<\/li>\n<li>Researching regulations, decisions and employment law changes<\/li>\n<li>Preparing for court<\/li>\n<li>Negotiating settlements<\/li>\n<li>Liaising with other legal professionals, trade unions and clients<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Employment Lawyer training and qualifications<\/h2>\n<p>An employment lawyer may be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawandlegal.co.uk\/careers\/solicitor\/\">solicitor<\/a> or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawandlegal.co.uk\/careers\/barrister\/\">barrister<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To become an employment solicitor, there are two routes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can study an undergraduate law degree<\/li>\n<li>Alternatively you can study any subject to degree level and then take a law conversion course<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After this, you\u2019ll need to undertake a one-year legal practice course (LPC), followed by a two-year training contract with a law firm.<\/p>\n<p>There are three stages to becoming a barrister.<\/p>\n<p><em>Academic:<\/em> A degree course at 2:2 level or above must be achieved. This may be a law degree or another degree-level subject, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Law (PgDL) or a Common Professional Examination (CPE).<\/p>\n<p><em>Vocational:<\/em> In the vocational stage, you need to join one of the \u2018Four Inns of Court\u2019. These are all based in London. You will need communicate with a wide range of people, from other legal professionals to those with no legal knowledge<\/li>\n<li>Are you able to stay calm under pressure? As an employment lawyer, you may need to work to tight deadlines and some of your clients may be very stressed at times.<\/li>\n<li>Do you have good research and analytical skills? You\u2019ll need to analyse regulations and case decisions on a regular basis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Employment opportunities<\/h2>\n<p>Many employment lawyers work within law firms. Positions for employment lawyers also exist in large businesses which have such a large HR department that they need an in-house lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also possible for employment lawyers to be self-employed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Employment lawyer salary<\/h2>\n<p>The average employment salary is \u00a345,750 according to recruitment website Reed in 2020.
